The Smiths Falls Bears, in partnership with the Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL), are thrilled to announce that veteran defenseman Davis Hails has committed to St. John Fisher University for the 2026-27 NCAA season.
A 2006-born native of Ottawa, ON, Hails is currently in his third season with the Bears organization. His tenure in Smiths Falls has been defined by steady defensive reliability and a surging offensive game. So far this season, Hails has tallied 14 points (3G, 11A) in just 27 games, establishing himself as one of the most productive blueliners in the league.
“Davis has been a cornerstone of our defensive corps for three seasons,” said the Bears’ assistant coach Josh Filoso. “His growth from a young prospect into a leader on and off the ice has been remarkable. St. John Fisher is getting a mobile, intelligent defenseman who can contribute in all three zones. This is a very proud day for our program.”
The Path to the Cardinals
St. John Fisher University, located in Pittsford, NY, has been aggressively building a competitive program in the NCAA ranks. By committing to the Cardinals, Hails joins a rising program that values the type of veteran poise and CCHL experience he brings to the table.
Standing as a testament to the Bears’ development model, Hails’ transition from local Ottawa minor hockey to a three-year CCHL veteran—and now to an NCAA commit—serves as a blueprint for young players entering the league.
Veteran Leadership on the Blueline
With 27 games played this season, Hails has already showcased his ability to quarterback a power play and shut down opposing top lines. His 11 assists reflect a high-level passing ability and vision that the Bears will rely on heavily as they push toward the postseason.
The Smiths Falls Bears organization extends its heartiest congratulations to Davis and the Hails family on this significant milestone.
