Bears Lose Heartbreaker to Kings 3-2 in a Shootout

The Bears quest for a playoff spot was dealt a blow Friday night on Fan Appreciation Night as Pembroke scored a power play goal with 18 seconds left in the game to tie it and won in a shootout.

A crowd of 490 came out to see the Bears take on a hot Pembroke squad who were coming off a 4-2 win over Ottawa on Wednesday night.

The first period was scoreless with the Bears owning a 14-10 shot advantage.

With the Bears on a power play in the second period it was Pembroke who scored the icebreaker as Jacob Kamps scored a shorthanded goal from a breakaway at 8:36. The Bears tied the game just 24 seconds later when Michael Larose scored his 18th of the year on the same power play.  Brett Humberstone & Mitchell Larabie recorded the assists. The period ended with a score of 1-1 and the teams each recorded 18 shots in a wide open period.

Larose struck again with his 19th at 1:50 of the 3rd period on a pretty passing play with Alex DiCarlo and Larabie. The score held up as Brad Dobson was outstanding in the Bears net and made a few 10 bell saves. Just 18 seconds away from an important win Jarrad Vroman scored while Pembroke was on the power play to push the game into overtime. Pembroke outshot Smiths Falls 13-7 as they pushed for the equalizer.

The 5 minute 3 on 3 solved nothing as each team  registered 2 shots. The final shot total was 44 – 41 in favor of Pembroke.

Pembroke went first in the shootout and Kamps missed as did DiCarlo for the Bears. In the second round Matthew Barnaby scored while Larabie did not score. Pembroke’s Malcolm Arseneau scored to open the 3rd round and give Pembroke the win.

Michael Larose was chosen the 2nd star of the game.
