The Bears’ Den in Smiths Falls as full of suspense on Friday night (Feb. 9) when the Smiths Falls Bears faced off against the Kemptville 73’s in CCJHL Junior A action. The game went into overtime and the Bears took home a 4-3 shootout win.

As with all good thrillers, the game started out slow with no goals in the first period.

The pace started to pick up in the second period with Smiths Falls Bear Ryan Richardson opening the scoring with the game’s first goal, assisted by Adam Church and Marc Shannon, at the 2.32 mark. Kemptville responded in kind with a goal by Ashton Fry “A” at 13.59.

The steam continued to build up in the third period. Mitchell Larabie scored for the Bears with an unassisted goal at 9.21. But this frail lead was outdone by two successive goals from Kemptville’s Jacob Thousand at 13.00 and Garrett Meyer at 17.00.

Now one goal behind and only three minutes to go, it was Bears’ player Shannon who evened the score for the Bears with a goal at the 17.57 mark, with assists going to Richardson and Kris Lalonde.

The first overtime period remained scoreless and forced a nail biting shootout. The first two shooters for each team managed to place their pucks in the nets, but the players following after didn’t get to share the same fortune. It was up to the Bears’ ninth shooter, rookie Ryan Richardson, who finally brought victory home.

First star went to Ryan Richardson (SFB), second star to Jacob Thousand (KEM), and third star went to Mitchell Larabie (SFB).
