Smiths Falls Bears open at home with big win over Pembroke Lumber Kings in CCHL action

The Smiths Falls Jr. A Bears evened their CCHL win-loss record Friday, Sept. 8 with a 5-4 win at home over the Pembroke Lumber Kings. The win gives the Bears a 2-2 record which includes a 3-1 win over Cornwall last week at the showcase in Ottawa to open their season.
In front of 350 fans Friday at their home opener, the Bears rallied from a one-goal deficit in the first period to score three times in the second to pull ahead, then had to fight back again in the third.
Bradley Dobson earned the win going the distance with 36 saves.
Scoring started quickly for Pembroke in the first period as Zachary Cross slipped one past Dobson just 30 seconds after the opening faceoff. That was the only goal of the period.
In the second, the Bears rallied to score three which started at 7:30 with Mitchell Larabie’s marker on the power play, assisted by Matthieu Franche and Alex DiCarlo.
Kris Lalonde had the Bears second goal three minutes later, assisted by Kyle Dowdall and Franche.
Then it was Michael Larose to give the home team a 3-1 advantage at 11:31, assisted by Dicarlo and Scott Gervais.
Matthew Barnaby brought the Lumber Kings closer with this goal with just five seconds remaining in the period for a 3-2 Bears advantage heading into the final frame.
It was at the 2:11 mark when Casey Rhodes struck for Pembroke to even the score, then Salim Mahi-Beaudry put the visitors up by one with his goal 30 seconds later.
With 5:17 on the clock, Dowdall scored the equalizer, assisted by Lalonde and Hunter Garlasco.

William Searle gave the Bears their home town win with his marker at 13:31, set up by Stuart Harley and Larose for the 5-4 final.
Jake Smith suffered the loss, turning away 38 of 43 shots on nets.
Game stars were Franche with his two assists for the first star; Larose with a goal and a helper for the game’s second star and Barnaby with a goal and an assist for Pembroke as the third star.
The Bears are in Hawksbury tonight (Sept. 9) for a 7:30 p.m. start.
Their next home game is Sept. 15 against Rockland.
